We announce our chosen charity for 2012

Cindy Cooper-Ling is a friend and former work colleague of Liz's who went to Kenya as a volunteer - and came back so touched by what she found, that she set up a charity called Start Small. We were so impressed by Cindy's drive and enthusiasm and that her donations and work directly assist the Kenyan ladies of Nakuru - and so we decided to support her work. Throughout 2012, we will be making a number of donations - and we will keep you informed about the sort of projects we will be supporting. Here, Cindy explains in her Cartwright Communications blog about her charity and her forthcoming visit to Kenya.
The kind team Cartwright Communications has ever so kindly offered to help Start Small financially which is fabulous and we are eternally grateful. All that is requested from me is a blog and to find a project for you to support – That sounds like a pretty good deal to me so before I begin, I’ll start with a simple... Thank you, you are ‘making a big difference’.
Firstly, I will tell you a little bit about me... I am a 30-something South African ‘lady’ who moved to the UK a long time ago. In keeping with the tradition all other Southern Hemisphere folk set, I started my life in London – this didn’t last long at all and I quickly escaped to the warmth and friendliness up ‘Norf’ and set up camp in Nottingham which very quickly became home.
Following a varied and thoroughly enjoyable career including running the Pitcher & Piano when it was THE place to go, starting and building a flower business from nowhere (yes, I am the Brown Paper lady and yes, I am sorry I chose to close the shop – a year on people still tell me off). Running the shop was great but I still had this niggling feeling I wanted to do more so last December I shut up shop and took myself off to Nakuru, Kenya to volunteer...
That is where Start Small was born and I found my calling. I am immensely proud and passionate about my little charity and the work we do, we support various ‘under the radar’ projects including providing meals in nursery schools, working with empowerment projects for our ladies and sponsoring children.
We are honoured to be working with Liz and her team and I can not wait to get to Nakuru to find a project that we will invest their donations in....details to follow! Start Small will be in Nakuru from 30 January to 10 Februaryand will send photos and info over to keep you updated!
