Background 

Cartwright Communications was appointed by Kaplan International to support with the public consultation element of the planning application for a new ‘live/learn’ facility for Liverpool International College.

The four-week project played an essential part in demonstrating to the Liverpool City Council planning committee that the project team had consulted with stakeholders and the local community ahead of submitting its application for the exciting scheme.

Approach

The project included the delivery of a two-part public consultation event, one for VIPs and stakeholders and another for the general public where attendees were encouraged to speak to the project team to find out more about the proposals and to give their feedback, which would then be incorporated into the planning application submission. On show throughout the day were the proposals and a video ‘flythrough’ of what the facility could look like. The public event was advertised in local press in the days prior.

We also engaged with key local, regional and national media titles to create excitement about the proposals and to drive footfall to the public consultation event. This focused on the £2bn Knowledge Quarter planned for Liverpool and the building’s potential to be the first on site at the much-discussed Paddington Village scheme in the city centre as well as the economic and cultural benefits of continuing to attract international students to Liverpool.

Results

The public consultation events were highly successful, attracting 100% positive feedback in support of the proposals on show. Attended by local people, key stakeholders and students, the events highlighted the benefits of the scheme and what it would bring to Liverpool if approved.

Our media relations activity attracted 24 pieces of media coverage, including the front page of the Liverpool Echo; reaching more than two million people.

The scheme achieved planning consent.
