BACKGROUND

Developer Cassidy Group wants to build a seven-storey purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) and mixed-use scheme in Beeston town centre near Nottingham. The scheme has been strongly contested by local people and politicians.

APPROACH

We worked closely with Cassidy Group and its planning consultants to create a two-day public consultation event to see as many stakeholders as possible to understand their fears, allay their concerns and talk in more depth about the benefits of the development, which is also set to bring a much-needed GP surgery to the area.

We organised the event and created all the marketing collateral, including CGI boards to display the plans. We also invited councillors, key stakeholders (including the Beeston Civic Society), students and university representatives.

We supported this activity with a robust communications plan, which incorporated press releases, long-form feature articles, interviews with journalists, and thought leadership pieces. We supported the planning team with its Design and Access Statement (DAS) – and we created a four-page briefing document for councillors.

RESULTS

Following an initial planning refusal, we successfully supported Cassidy Group through the appeal process, which it won in June 2023.
