Work experience at Cartwright Communications
Here at Cartwright, we offer work experience placements in order to provide a taste of life in a PR agency. From media liaison and sell ins to event organisation, we try to give each of our guests a well-rounded experience of life at Cartwright. Sixth-form student Elias Serghi, who joined us at CC HQ for a week, tells us what he learned during his time in the office.
Why I came to Cartwright
Cartwright Communications is a PR company based in Nottingham that works with a range of different clients and, since I have an interest in pursuing a career in marketing, I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to undertake some work experience there.
I am currently studying English language, sociology and history at A-Level at George Spencer Academy sixth form and thought my English language and sociology skills would serve me well in this industry.
Life in the office
The staff at Cartwright Communications are great. They were all incredibly friendly and welcoming, making sure I felt comfortable in what could have been a nerve-wracking experience.
The team all went out of their way to help me and never made me feel like I was doing a bad job.
I was guided carefully through tasks and given constructive criticism on where I could make improvements. The work is important – as a lot of it will eventually be released to the public instead of hidden internally – so the staff have a very high standard to maintain.
What I learned
The topics and clients varied massively, from housing developers, bird experts and influential offices to promoting new hotels and restaurants in Leicester and researching the journalists that would write about them.
This has really given me a “behind the scenes” look at how to write articles and how they are released to the media which was really helpful.
Although I was only at Cartwright for a week, the staff have managed to give me a good insight into the work they do on a day-to-day basis.
My work experience here has really shown me what life is like in a PR agency.
I would definitely recommend spending a week at Cartwright Communications for work experience if you are considering a career in this field. A lot of written skills can be applied to this kind of work and the team is really great at helping you to do so.
I had a very productive week and I am proud of the amount of new skills I have learned during this experience.
This experience has also grown my sense of productivity and attitude towards written work that I can now apply to my work in sixth form – considering I take three essay-based subjects.
