Background

Cartwright Communications was appointed to lead PR activity for the Matt Hampson Foundation’s landmark construction project – The Get Busy Living Centre in Leicestershire.

A derelict hangar was transformed into a state-of-the-art facility for beneficiaries of the Foundation – many of whom have suffered life-changing injuries through sport, like Matt himself in 2005 – to gather, socialise, and receive rehabilitation.

Our approach

We devised a 12-month PR plan to last the duration of the build, with three key phases identified to coincide with the progress of construction and highlight different milestones throughout.

Our role also included working alongside the Foundation and partners to identify other organisations who would be interested in getting involved with the build, free of charge or at a greatly reduced rate – and promoting them as thanks for their involvement.

Using a range of media relations tactics – and leveraging the role of inspirational charity figurehead, Matt Hampson, we were able to maximise media coverage locally, regionally and within key media within the sports and construction industries.

Results

The Get Busy Living Centre has been widely celebrated both in the media and through various different industry awards including being named the best ‘Community Benefit’ built project in the UK at the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) Awards, ‘Most Inspiring Building Project of the Year’ at the Inspire Awards and named top project at the Insider East Midlands Property Dinner. Our work for the Foundation picked up silver at the CPIR PRide Midlands awards too.

Extensive media coverage was achieved in outlets including Sky Sports News, BBC Sport, Builder and Engineer as well as regional and local titles – focusing on key milestones such as start on site and topping out ceremonies attended by sporting celebrities including Mike Tindall MBE and members of the Leicester Tigers squad.

More than 70 project partners were involved throughout the build, helping to massively reduce build costs for the Foundation and allow Matt’s dream to become a reality.
